Shoemaker_good_vibes 4/6/16

This week we did not have anything much going on. We were really trying to pin down the overall direction of the film. It was up in the air considering our difficulties in finding locations and organizing the large groups. We had set up two shoots for the next two weeks but both ended up falling through. This was when our film really changed for the better in my opinion. We were a bit lost but in the long run all the stress worked out. This experience taught me its not always easy to get what you want but you have to power through and work with what is at hand. Something I think the group as a whole has done a great job with.

We did not have class this week but the shoot we had the previous weekend was also canceled. We showed up to a locked room and our UNCW professor nowhere to be found. We decided to scrape for that day, so I took a trip to the beach to get some B-roll. It was a dreary and windy day so it made for some nice shots. But I wanted some different more original B-roll. I did some more plate breaking and shot it on the fs100 but the footage turned our very overexposed, I did have a chance to reshoot it on the t3i and it turned out much better. I am still learning about all the different cameras and how to work them. I think I have improved my abilities but definently still have some learning to do. Overall a productive week of shooting even know our original shoot fell through.

This week was mostly spent on collecting B-roll. the shoot we had planed for the previous weekend so we decided to take a different track for our film. The biggest struggle this week was deciding what was it we needed to shoot and how we were going to shoot them. Our original plan I think had to many people involved and orchestrating everything just was not working out. The final product turned our very experimental which is what we were going for so I guess all the hicups were there to put us here with our final product.

Shoemaker Vision repsonse

I know this is a little late, forgot to do it last Friday. I was able to attend the panel with Garrett Spake and other students discussing papers they have wrote about a variety of topics. Spakes look at marketing and the use of sequels and remakes really interested me. Obviously now we see this almost all of the time. But I had never thought much into its origins. The other presenters had intersting topics but none really hit home except Spakes. It was interesting to learn about the homophobia in these buddy films we have became so familiar with. I was sad that I was not able to make the first block that a film I worked on last semester screened in. The other filmmakers were pleased with the audience response to our film. I was also able to attend about 30 minuetes of the second film block. I had never been to visions before so I was interested in seeing what they screened. It was a wide variety which I liked keeping me focused without loosing my attention. I would have liked to attend more of the blocks but life got in the way.

This week has been hectic. Working on getting the footage all together has been a nightmare. But we are getting closer to our final product. Our original plan from the beginning of the semester was changed greatly. We now are focusing on the individual drummers much more that originally intended. After numerous let downs and location issues we just had to take another direction. I am excited to see how this film turns out. After all the things that have gotten in our way I think that there is still a great project to come out of it. My main goals have been to finish up acquiring b-roll and trying to assist other aspects of the project as much as possible. This project has taught me a lot of being a DP and the process of filmmaking. It is not always as easy when dealing with a large variety of people.
